The Federal Government will today, Saturday, commission the first completed part of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, according to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Uchenna Orji, Umahi said the event will take place at KM 8 of the project, around the Jakande Estate area in Lagos.

The part to be commissioned is a 30-kilometre stretch from Phase I, Section I of the 750-kilometre-long road project.

Umahi also revealed that President Bola Tinubu is expected to join the event virtually and commission other completed projects under his Renewed Hope agenda across Southern Nigeria.

These include:

  • The Ahmadu Bello to Eleko Village section in Lekki Peninsula,
  • The dualisation of the East-West Road, Section II (Sub Section I) from Eleme Junction to Ahoada in Rivers State,
  • The rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan dual carriageway,
  • The repaired Alesi to Ugep section (Iyamoyung-Ugep) in Cross River State,
  • The reconstructed collapsed Enugu Bridge at New Artisan Market along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road.

According to the Works Minister, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of President Tinubu’s long-term goals, first initiated 27 years ago. The highway is designed to link several coastal communities across nine states in Nigeria.

“It is a dream conceived and now a dream actualized,” Umahi said.

He explained that the project aims to boost regional unity, improve transportation, and bring inclusive and lasting development to Nigeria’s coastal areas.

Meanwhile, Umahi had earlier announced that toll collection on the Lagos-Calabar highway would begin by December 2025.
