Published

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola on Thursday said that President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) led Federal Government is committed in fixing every sector of our national life to address the infrastructural gap.

Fashola who stated this during the handover of 2.12 kilometers roads reconstructed by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, said that the infrastructural needs of the nation is steadily being bridged by gradual processes of repairs, renewal and construction on major highways and tertiary institutions in the country.

The Minister who was represented by the Federal Controller of Works, Femi Oyekanmi, also said that the roads would improve the learning environment in the University.

“It is undebatable that quality education will be impacted by the quality of infrastructure and the learning environment and those who doubt it Should simply listen to some the feedbacks from students in the schools where this type of intervention has taken place.

“Currently, there are 43 such interventions in internal roads within tertiary institutions across Nigeria, and the students are expressing a renewed enthusiasm with regard to attending classes because some defective roads have been restored to motorability, “ he said.

He further disclosed that 18 out of the 43 such interventions have been completed, adding that 27 persons were employed to execute the projects being handed over to UNN.

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe, said the roads would add great value to learning and research in the institution, adding that the school needs more of such interventions to improve seamless academic pursuits.

He said: “UNN is a very big and old university, and we sit on a large expanse of land. The implication is that we need roads to access all the facilities we have put in place to run the university in order to promote teaching and research. This explains why we are thankful to the Minister.

“As I said earlier, our infrastructural supply is weak and dwindling due to age. Therefore, the more, the merrier. We are expecting more from the Minister given our size and age.”

Represented by his deputy, Pat Okpoko, the VC however, thanked the ministry for the quality of works done on the roads which includes: 1040 km Ikejiani Road with 300 meters drain, 400 km Ugwuegede Road with 150 meters drain and 580 km Engineering-Odim Gate Road with 200 meters drain.

Reacting on the development, the Students Union Government President of UNN, Comrade Fortunatus Chimezie, said the roads have improved the infrastructural ambiance of the school.
