The stalemate at Enyimba International Stadium was not enough to overturn the first-leg deficit for the People’s Elephants. Needing two goals to advance, Enyimba could not find the back of the net.

The defeat comes as fellow Nigerian club Remo Stars also crashed out on penalties to Ghana’s Medeama. After a 1-0 win each in the first leg, Medeama prevailed 3-2 in the shootout.

Remo Stars’ loss compounds a disappointing Champions League for Nigerian teams. Just the day before, two-time winners Enyimba lost 4-3 on aggregate to Al Ahli Benghazi, ending their tournament in the preliminary round for the first time since 2015.

In brighter news for Nigeria, Bendel Insurance reached the Confederation Cup next stage with a penalty shootout win over Aso Chlef after scores finished 1-1 over two legs.
