The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has announced the demise of Dr. Thomas Maurice Asuquo John, a former Group Managing Director and Acting Alternate Chairman of the Board of the now-defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
Dr. Thomas John, a highly regarded administrator and professional in the oil and gas industry, passed away at the age of 84.
According to a statement, the deceased served as the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Dr. Aret Adams.
His tenure, which spanned from April 1990 to June 1992, was marked by significant contributions to the development and management of the nation’s petroleum resources.
John held various key positions in the industry, including serving as a Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum, taking on the role of Executive Chairman at Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and formerly serving as a Non-Executive Director at United Bank for Africa Plc.
In the official statement, NNPC Ltd. expressed condolences, stating, “A quintessential administrator and oil & gas industry professional, Dr. John was the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Dr. Aret Adams from April 1990 to June 1992. He was also a Non-Executive Director, South Atlantic Petroleum, Executive Chairman, Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and a former Non-Executive Director, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, among other positions.”
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire NNPC Ltd. Management and Staff to Dr. John’s wife, family, friends, and relatives during this difficult period.
