Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has undergone heart surgery after doctors discovered a heart rhythm disorder, his club Lazio have confirmed.

Sarri, who is 66, is currently the head coach of the Serie A side. Lazio said the procedure was successful and that the Italian manager is expected to return to work in the coming days.

In a statement released by the club, Lazio said Sarri was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes an irregular heartbeat.

The statement read, “SS Lazio announces that coach Maurizio Sarri, following a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, underwent transcatheter ablation surgery using PFA technology at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic.”

Lazio confirmed that the operation was carried out by Professor Andrea Natale, a renowned heart specialist with more than 30 years of experience in treating the condition.

“The surgery, performed by Professor Andrea Natale, an international pioneer with over thirty years of experience in treating this condition, was successful,” the club said.

Lazio also revealed that the club’s team doctor was present during the procedure.

“The SS Lazio team doctor, Dr Italo Leo, was present at the event,” the statement added.

Giving an update on Sarri’s recovery, the club said he would be back to his normal duties shortly.

“The coach will resume regular management of the team in the next few days,” Lazio stated.

The club and Sarri also expressed gratitude to the hospital and medical team involved in the surgery.

“SS Lazio and the coach thank the Policlinico Tor Vergata and Professor Natale’s team for their high level of professionalism and the quality of care they provide to all patients every day,” the statement concluded.

Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that causes the heartbeat to become irregular or very fast. Symptoms can include heart palpitations, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue.

Sarri, who previously managed Chelsea and Napoli, is in his second spell as Lazio coach.

Lazio are currently eighth in the Serie A standings. They are eight points behind fourth-placed Juventus and 12 points adrift of league leaders Inter Milan.

The Rome-based club will face Napoli at home at the start of 2026 before hosting Fiorentina on January 7.
