Everton edge Leicester as Arsenal, Southampton settle for draw
Leicester City suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton on Wednesday night in the Premier League.
The Foxes failed to build on their 3-0 victory over Brighton on Saturday as they fell to goals from Richarlison and Mason Holgate.
The home side fell behind in the 21st minute when Alex Iwobi found Brazilian striker, Richarlison, who fired a low right-footed effort into the far corner of Schmeichel’s goal, though he stood a chance of saving the ball.
Right-back, Holgate scored his first goal of the season for the Merseyside club after the Evertonians forced Kasper Schmeichel to a double save from a corner kick.
The home side almost got lucky with a penalty in the 83rd minute when Andre Gomez appeared to have tripped Ayoze Perez in the Toffees’ box but referee ruled it out after checking the pitch-side monitor.
Perez managed to pull one back for the home side moments later but was caught offside before the initial pass that led to the goal and as such ref Mason ruled it out.
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal force Southampton to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates, despite going behind in the first half.
Underfire Arteta looked to stir his Gunners’ side to their Premier League win since defeating Manchester United at Old Trafford November 1st but settled for a point.
Theo Walcott pot the away side ahead in the 18th minute as he came back to haunt his former team.
Arsenal fail to deal with a simple pass into midfield from Vestergaard and Adams pounces on the loose ball to set Walcott through. With just Leno to beat, the ex-Arsenal man kept his composure to chip the keeper and put the Saints ahead.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made amends for his own goal in the defeat to Burnley over the weekend by scoring his team’s equalizer in the 52nd minute.
Saka skips past Walker-Peters and Romeu before playing it to Nketiah who dinks it round the corner for Aubameyang to finish with ease.
Walcott became a torn in the flesh for his former team again when he forced defender Gabriel to commit a foul that earned him his second yellow of the game and subsequently a red card.
Southampton, however, failed to capitalize on the one man advantage as the game ended 1-1 at the Emirates.
