Europa League: Osimhen’s Napoli to face Barcelona in play-off round

Victor Osimhen’s Napoli side have been drawn against Barcelona in the Europa League knockout round play-off.

The Spanish side will be featuring in the Europa League for the first time since 2003-04, when the La Liga side competed in the UEFA Cup.

The Nigerian who suffered a left cheekbone and orbital fracture in Napoli’s Serie A clash against Inter Milan on November 21 will likely be back for the clash in February.

Meanwhile, Dortmund were also pitted against Rangers following Monday’s draw for the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

When will the EUL play-off ties hold

The first legs of the play-off ties will be played on February 17, with the return fixtures a week later on February 24.

The winners of the play-off round will face the eight teams who already qualified for the last 16 of the Europa League by coming tops in their respective groups.

Instead of a round of 32, the eight second-placed teams will meet one of the eight sides finishing third in their respective Champions League groups in a two-legged play-off round in February.

Those eight teams will join the eight Europa League group winners in the last 16 in March.

The teams who finish third in their Europa League groups will also see their European seasons extended for the first time, with those eight sides facing one of the eight sides who finished second in the Europa Conference League group stage for a place in the last 16 of that competition.
