Egypt secured a landmark achievement on Sunday, recording their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a commanding 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.
The result lifted the Pharaohs to the summit of Group G and significantly enhanced their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
Widely tipped as favorites before kickoff, Egypt relied on the attacking prowess of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, while thousands of Egyptian supporters created a vibrant atmosphere inside the stadium.
However, it was New Zealand who made the brighter start and stunned their opponents with the opening goal.
The All Whites took the lead in the 15th minute when defender Finn Surman climbed above Egypt’s defense to head home Tim Payne’s corner, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to give New Zealand an unexpected advantage.
Despite controlling large portions of the game and searching for an equalizer, Egypt were unable to find a breakthrough before halftime. Their persistence eventually paid off in the second half as Mostafa Ziko restored parity in the 58th minute, directing a well-timed header into the net from Mohamed Hany’s delivery.
Egypt completed the turnaround nine minutes later through Salah. The forward combined neatly with Ziko in a quick exchange before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful left-footed effort beyond the New Zealand goalkeeper to put his side ahead.
The Pharaohs then put the contest beyond doubt when Trezeguet connected with Salah’s outswinging corner, producing an excellent header that extended Egypt’s lead and sparked celebrations among the traveling fans.
The victory represents a major boost for Egypt after beginning their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium. With four points collected from their opening two matches, the Pharaohs now sit atop Group G and are well-positioned in the race for a place in the knockout stage.
For New Zealand, the defeat proved a setback following their opening 2-2 draw with Iran. The All Whites remain at the foot of the standings with one point from two matches and face an uphill battle to keep their qualification hopes alive.
