The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested one Olawole Sunday, a suspected internet fraudster, for buying bank account details from people and using them to carry out fraud.

This was made known in a statement on Monday by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC.

Oyewale said the suspect’s method was to pay young individuals between N25,000 and N50,000 to open multiple bank accounts and then hand over all their banking details, including ATM cards.

“Sunday’s modus operandi involved encouraging young people to open multiple bank accounts, pay them either N25,000 or N50,000 for each account, and collect their bank details,” Oyewale said.
The scam came to light after Sunday allegedly used the bank account of one Uyi Eghosa to trick an unsuspecting victim into paying N2 million. He claimed the money was for forex trading.

Eghosa was first arrested, but during questioning, he told the EFCC he was not aware that his account was being used for fraud. He explained that he had handed over his account details and ATM card to Sunday in exchange for N25,000.

“The account owner, Eghosa, was arrested, and his disclosure that he was unaware that his account was used in defrauding members of the public led to Sunday’s arrest,” the EFCC said.

According to Oyewale, Sunday has confessed to the crime and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.
