The Edo State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Express Airline and KDN Aero as part of efforts to establish a state-owned airline.
According to Channels Television, Governor Monday Okpebholo signed the agreement at Government House in Benin City following discussions with representatives of the aviation companies.
The proposed airline, to be known as Edo Air, is expected to strengthen air connectivity and support economic activities in the state.
Okpebholo expresses confidence in partnership
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Okpebholo described the agreement as the beginning of a broader partnership.
“We have signed the MoU, and this is the first part of it,” he said.
The governor expressed confidence in the technical capabilities of the proposed partners and indicated that the state hoped to commence airline operations soon.
However, no confirmed launch date was announced.
Edo delegation visits China
The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, explained that the agreement followed a September 14 visit to China by a seven-member delegation.
The delegation, which included government officials and aviation experts, assessed potential partners and their operational capabilities.
Ikhilor said representatives inspected the facilities of China Express Airline and the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
The visit included a tour of China Express Airline’s flight-monitoring operations.
According to the secretary, the inspections helped officials evaluate the company’s suitability as a technical and operational partner.
Airline project awaits further arrangements
The President of China Express Airline, Shansheng Li, participated in the signing ceremony alongside representatives of KDN Aero.
Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa and other senior government officials also attended.
The state government said further discussions would determine the steps needed to establish the airline.
The signing of the agreement does not mean that commercial flight operations have commenced.
