Edo mob beat two policemen to death

Two policemen were reportedly beaten to death by an angry mob in the community of Ikpeshi in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State over the weekend.

The unfortunate event unfolded when a convoy, escorting former Edo State House of Assembly member Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the death of the rider and passenger.

The policemen, identified as Inspector Brownson Brown, Inspector Abubarka Fakkuk, Sergeant Taiye Ojiefo, and Sergeant Elisha John, were in a Toyota Hilux van on escort duty when the accident occurred.

Angry youths, reacting to the incident, invaded the Edo State Security Volunteer Network (vigilante) office where the policemen were taken into custody.

The mob overran the facility, beating Inspector Abubaka Fakku and Sergeant Elisha John to death.

The other two officers are currently receiving treatment at Ifejola hospital Igarra, and the vigilante group managed to rescue them.

A police source provided details, stating, “In the process, the rider and passenger died on the spot, and in reaction, an angry mob attacked the policemen, beat Inspector Abubaka Fakku and Sergeant Elisha John to death while two others are receiving treatment at Ifejola hospital Igarra.”

The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident on Sunday, assuring that more details would be made available in due course.

Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government area, Hon. Tajudeen Alade, condemned the violent act by the youths and commended the vigilante for their efforts in saving the lives of the policemen.

He assured that those involved in the attack would be brought to justice and pledged support for the twin sister of one of the motorcycle occupants who lost their lives in the accident.
