The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has successfully prosecuted a couple in Benin City for human trafficking offenses.

The Coordinator of the Benin Zonal Command of NAPTIP, Mr. Ganiu Aganran, announced the conviction in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday.

“The couple, Adesuwa Otabor and Otabor Idahosa, was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit human trafficking,” Aganran stated.

According to the NAPTIP coordinator, the High Court, Criminal Division 2, in Benin City found the couple guilty of a serious offense. “The court found the couple guilty of exporting a victim to Dubai for prostitution,” he explained.

Aganran emphasized the legal implications of the couple’s actions, noting, “The offence contravened Section 27 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.”

The conviction aligns with NAPTIP’s broader strategy to combat human trafficking. Aganran described the successful prosecution as “part of NAPTIP’s agenda of arresting, prosecuting and convicting high-profile human traffickers.”
