Ebonyi: NSCDC parades seven suspects for allegedly operating illegal JAMB centres

Published

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, on  Thursday, paraded seven suspects for allegedly operating illegal Joint Admission and Matriculation Board offices and centres in Abakaliki, ,Ebonyi State capital.

The State Commandant of the Corps,  Mrs  Lucy Samuel, said the suspects were also extorting money and issuing  fake admission letters to the unsuspecting JAMB candidates and admission seekers in the state.

They were paraded at the Corps headquarters, located Finance area of the Abakaliki metropolis, on Thursday.

Mrs Samuel, who was represented by the Corps Public Relations Officer, Mr. Paul Odimba, during the parade of the suspects, alleged that in addition to running illegal JAMB registration centres, they were allegedly involved in other racketeering with students.

Paul, who equally hinted that the suspects were also collecting fees higher than what the office fixed for candidates’ registration, across the country, added that reports of their illegal activities reached the Corps some weeks back.

“These people have been in the habit of defrauding unsuspecting candidates seeking for admission into the nation’s Universities.

“This was not the first time we heard or got reports of what they do to candidates, but we got them arrested and paraded , on a tip from one of our sources. If they are found guilty, they would be prosecuted in the court of law.’

The Ebonyi State Coordinator of JAMB, Mrs Jema Iheme, said the Board had repeatedly warned the  suspects to desist from extorting and defrauding innocent students, in the name of JAMB to no avail.

She warned others who wwre still engaging in the criminal act to desist from same or face the wrath of the law.

“I urge students and candidates to ensure that they confirm the accreditation status of centres before patronising them,” she said.
