The Department of State Services has arrested a suspect in connection with the recent attack on Peter Obi and chieftains of the African Democratic Congress in Benin, Edo State.

According to reports, the suspect, identified as Udeme Sunday Stephen, was apprehended after a thorough investigation into the incident, as described by security sources.

Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, was attacked last Tuesday alongside other party figures at the residence of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, had earlier disclosed that the attack occurred shortly after the delegation returned from the ADC secretariat, where they formally received the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, into the party.

Photographs released after the incident showed damaged vehicles and bullet-riddled gates at the residence, raising concerns about the safety of political actors ahead of future electoral activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not released further details regarding the motive behind the attack or whether additional suspects are being sought.
