Deaf and dumb ex-convict jailed six months for burglary and stealing
Magistrate Olugbenga Oladoke of a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has sentenced an ex-convict to six months in jail for burglary and stealing.
WuzupNigeria reports that the 22-year-old culprit, Muraina Sodiq, can neither hear nor could talk.
Muraina pleaded guilty to two-count of forceful entry and stealing.
He had previously served an undisclosed period in jail for stealing cable in Osogbo.
Upon his arraignment, details of the charges pressed against him were interpreted for the defendant through the use of sign language.
Muraina’s father, who witnessed the proceedings, after interaction with his son, also confirmed to the court that the defendant understood the charges as read and had pleaded guilty.
The defendant, who admitted committing the crime, was said to have on March 15, 2020, at Ona Babaona, Oke Baale Area, Osogbo, entered into a shop belonging to one Rafiu Haruna and stole a welding engine valued N45,000 and one car battery valued N18,000.
Razaq Olayiwola, the prosecutor of the case said the offences committed contravene Sections 413 and 390 (9) of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. Il Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
Olayiwola while presenting facts of the case, tendered car battery and welding engine stole by the defendant as exhibits.
Najite Okobe announced appearance for the defendant and urged the court to be lenient with his client.
He said Muraina even with his disability did not waste the time of the court and was remorseful after he was subjected to a serious beating when he was caught where he had gone to steal.
But the prosecutor urged the court give judgement as appropriate, saying Muraina had served a prison term for stealing cable in Osogbo.
In his ruling, Magistrate Oladoke found the defendant guilty of the two counts and sentenced him to six months jail term at Ile-Ife Correctional Center.
