Container crushes five to death in Anambra, injures others

A tragic accident involving an L300 commercial bus and a Leyland truck at Odumudu Junction along the Nteje-Awka Expressway in Anambra has resulted in the loss of five lives, with five others sustaining injuries.

The incident occurred around 7:30 am on Friday and involved a total of 10 individuals, comprising three males and seven females.

According to an eyewitness, the accident was caused by a deteriorated section of the road in the area.

The two vehicles were traveling from opposite directions, but when they reached the damaged road portion, the container on the truck fell onto the bus, leading to severe injuries for some of the passengers.

Confirming the incident, Margaret Onabe, the Acting Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, revealed that five people had tragically lost their lives, while five others had suffered varying degrees of injury.

She explained that the FRSC rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje had promptly taken the injured victims to Divine Care Hospital in Umunya for necessary medical attention.

The deceased individuals were taken to Chira Hospital for official confirmation by medical professionals before being transported to the New Jerusalem Mortuary in Nteje.

At the time of the report, efforts were underway, with the collaboration of the Sector Commander and the Unit Commander in Nteje, to clear the roadway obstruction caused by the accident.

Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander of the Anambra State Corps, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and extended his wishes for a swift recovery to the injured victims.

He also urged motorists to exercise caution and remain vigilant about their surroundings while driving.
