A Colorado based farm has been selected to provide playing surfaces for several stadiums that will host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
According to CNN, Green Valley Turf, located near Denver, will grow and supply grass for stadiums in Atlanta, Dallas and Houston, with harvesting already underway for Houston’s NRG Stadium.
The turf consists of a blend of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, which is being transported in refrigerated trucks before installation at the venues.
Explaining the decision to source the grass from Colorado, Green Valley Turf owner Joe Wilkins III said the climate controlled conditions inside the stadiums made the grass variety ideal for the tournament.
“It seems a little strange that the grass is coming all the way from Colorado, but those buildings will be climate controlled at 70 degrees throughout the whole tournament, so they needed a cool season grass which thrives in our environment that’s near impossible to grow closer to where the venues are,” Wilkins said.
The company said installing the playing surface in Houston alone will require about two dozen truckloads of turf.
Green Valley Turf has previously supplied playing surfaces for major sporting events and professional teams, making it one of the leading turf providers selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
