Dangote Industries is considering the development of a 1,000-megawatt liquefied natural gas power plant in Kenya. This project is part of a wider refinery project planned for Lamu. Notably, the Dangote Kenya power plant proposal signals a significant energy sector investment in the country.
According to Africa Report, the Kenyan government is negotiating with Dangote Industries over increasing the proposed power plant’s capacity to 1,000MW. The Dangote Kenya power plant could transform local electricity supply if realised.
The project is expected to form part of an integrated energy hub combining refining operations with electricity generation at the power plant.
Kenya seeks bigger capacity
Initial plans reportedly envisaged a significantly smaller power facility, but Kenyan authorities are pushing for expanded capacity.
The proposed plant would help address electricity shortages while providing more dependable energy for industrial activities. In addition, the power plant is likely to support regional energy security.
Plans also involve tapping natural gas supplies from Tanzania to support electricity generation.
Refinery project expands Dangote footprint
The power facility would complement Dangote’s proposed refinery in the coastal region of Lamu.
If negotiations are concluded, the development would further expand Dangote Industries’ presence across Africa. This would be beyond its existing interests in cement, petroleum refining and other industrial sectors.
Discussions between the company and Kenyan authorities remain ongoing, with further details expected as negotiations progress.
