Cleric blames nation’s socio-economic challenges on greed

Published

Ugwuogo said this in a homily at St. Mary Catholic Church, Eha-Alumona, near Nsukka, on Friday, during a requiem mass in honor of Madam Regina Okwor.

The deceased, who died at the age of 85, is the mother of Mr Vincent Okwor, a retiree and former South-East Zonal Manager of the Newsmen.

The cleric said that materialistic and get-rich-quick syndrome remained the major cause of insecurity, stress, unfulfilled dreams, wickedness, agitations, and bloodshed in Nigeria.

According to him, most people are no longer comfortable with the challenges and pains, resulting from pervasive greed in society.

Ugwuogo said: “In all we do, we should remember that a day of judgment and reckoning is coming and we will surely give an account of all we have done on earth.

“It is only a stupid human being that does not know that he has an expiry date and one day, he will leave everything on earth behind and face eternity.

“However, true Christians, who fear God, aim to get eternity as a reward for their God-fearing life on earth.

“With this, it means that we all will not end here as some people erroneously think or are misguided to believe.

“There is a place of paradise prepared after death as a reward for only those that lived according to the dictates of the Highest.’’

The priest encouraged the bereaved family to “mourn with hope”, saying, “Nma (mummy) lived a pious life and she was fully committed to the work of the church and charity’’.

In a brief remark, Vincent, who was the chief mourner, expressed the family’s gratitude to those that came to commiserate with them.

“I pray that God will continue to identify with you all in your time of distress,’’ he said.
