Former Nigerian athlete, Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, has said she changed her perception about divorce over the alarming rate of domestic violence in the country.

Chioma Ajunwa, a police officer and Olympic gold medallist, in an interview with The PUNCH, said:

“In Igboland where I come from, we do not believe in divorce. However, the extent of violence in Nigeria today is alarming. This made me believe that marriage is not a do- or-die-affair.

“I believe that God created us equal. If you don’t want me to do something, you should not do that because if it will hurt you, it will also hurt me.”

She further went on to advise young and intending couples to love from their hearts and also learn to respect each other.

She said:

“Respect is reciprocal. Love should come from the mind and not from the lips. A woman that wants to marry should test the man and know if the man loves her from the depth of his heart. They should make sure that they are compatible because when this is missing between a couple, it’s the beginning of failure in that marriage.

“Compatibility in marriage is very essential. Young couples, more importantly, women, must have something before they get into marriage. Try to stand on your own. Do not totally depend on the wealth of a man.”
