England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright has announced her retirement from international football after nearly a decade with the national team.

Bright, 32, earned 88 caps for England since her debut in 2016 and was a key part of the squad that won the UEFA Women’s European Championship in 2022. She also captained the Lionesses to their first-ever World Cup final appearance in 2023, where they lost to Spain.

The Chelsea captain made the announcement on her podcast “Daly Brightness,” which she co-hosts with former England teammate Rachel Daly.

“The reality of the last decade wearing the Three Lions has surpassed even my wildest dreams,” Bright said. “It’s been beyond special for me, and I wish it could last forever. However, in football, all good things must come to an end, and with that, I have decided to retire from international football.”

Bright missed England’s title defence at the Women’s European Championship in July, saying she was not in the right condition to give her best physically or mentally.

The defender underwent knee surgery during the off-season and began counselling sessions. She said stepping back from the national team was “by far the best decision I have ever made.”

Bright will continue to play for Chelsea, where she remains captain and one of the longest-serving players in the squad.
