Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher issued a live on-air apology to Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique after a light-hearted remark about being “snubbed” by the coach during CBS Sports’ broadcast.
The exchange followed Paris Saint-Germain securing a second straight place in the UEFA Champions League final after eliminating Bayern Munich in the semi-final stage.
During post-match analysis on CBS Sports, pundit Micah Richards joked that Carragher was partly responsible for Enrique’s absence from the panel. He said: “Because Jamie opened his big mouth, talking all the time, Luis Enrique doesn’t want to speak to us.”
The broadcast later took a different turn when PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi brought Enrique into the studio segment, introducing him as “the best coach in the world,” before the manager joined the discussion.
Speaking directly to Enrique on air, Carragher used the opportunity to apologise for his conduct during last season’s Champions League semi-final between PSG and Borussia Dortmund.
“Luis, I would like to apologise for my behaviour in Dortmund, for the semi-final,” Carragher said.
“I had a Dortmund scarf on, but sometimes, as we all know, when we have had a few drinks, we get a little bit carried away.”
He continued by praising the French side’s recent performances, adding: “We absolutely loved your team, what they did last year and you’ve been an absolute joy to watch for the last two years in the Champions League. Congratulations for making the final again.”
Enrique responded in a relaxed manner, brushing off the apology and replying: “Thank you, thank you. You don’t have to apologise.”
