Carabao Cup: Man Utd face City, Brentford host Tottenham in semis
Manchester United will host Manchester City in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup after edging Everton 2-0 on Wednesday.
Edinson Cavani broke the deadlock after almost 90 minutes of stalemate before Anthony Martial who assisted the first made it 2-0 in the 96th minute as United secured their spot.
City who thrashed Arsenal 4-1 thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte, would have preferred Everton but will settle for a Derby.
Recall that the first Manchester Derby of the season ended in a goalless draw in what looked like the most boring in recent times. Both teams will, however, find a to pour in goals in the must-win semi-final.
In the second semis, history-making Brentford will face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in the London derby when the Carabao Cup semis return in January.
Josh Dasilva scored a superb goal to send Premier League side, Newcastle, out as they face Spurs who defeated Stoke 3-1 thanks to goals from Harry Kane, Ben Davies and Gareth Bale.
The semi-finals are usually two-legged affairs but will be played over just one match in this occasion, in the week commencing January 4.
The final had initially been scheduled for February 28 but is now set to be played at Wembley on April 25.
The EFL said: “It is the objective of the League to stage the final with as many supporters in attendance as possible and the decision has therefore been taken to move the final from its original date.” [Sky Sports]
