Carabao Cup: Man City thrash Arsenal 4-1, Brentford edge Newcastle to make historical semis

Manchester City cruised into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after a comfortable 4-1 thumping of Arsenal at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

Gabriel Jesus put City to a good start in the second minute after Phil Foden found Zinchenko who whipped in a neat cross that found the head of the unmarked Brazillian and then the back of the net.

Alexander Lacazette pulled Arsenal levelled with a brilliant diving header from Gabriel Martinelli’s second successive brilliant cross to get Mikel Arteta’s team back in the game. It’s the Frenchman’s fifth goal of the season.

Arsenal’s young goalkeeper Alex Rúnarsson pulled a brilliant safe in the 41st minute to deny City a second lead after blocking a one-on-one from Jesus.

Martinelli who just returned from a six-month knee injury went to the ground towards the end of the first half after City’s keeper caught his ankle in an attempt to stop a goal-bound run after Joe Willock picked up the Brazilian with a brilliant through pass.

The 19-year-old limped off the pitch but returns moments after following a prior treatment from the Gunners’ paramedic team.

A blunder from Rúnarsson was all to took fro City to regain the lead in the second half and the goals kept pouring in for the Manchester side from then on.

The Icelandic keeper fumbled a free-kick from Riyad Mahrez in the 54th minute to give the visitors the all-important 2-1 lead though he had a better chance of saving the ball.

Four minutes later, Pep Guardiola’s men made it 3-1 after an assist from Brazillian midfielder, Fernandinho but the away team ere not done just yet.

City’s defender, Aymeric Laport also got on the score sheet in the 73rd minute to make it 4-1, dashing all hopes of the home side’s progression to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Brentford secured a historic win over Newcastle to progress to their first major cup semi-final since they were established.

Josh Dasilva made history for the  Championship team with his second-half goal (66), sending them to the semis, their first in their 131-year existence.

However, City progressed to the semis in the quest to retain the trophy for a fourth consecutive time having won in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively.
