A Canadian woman, Michelle Omoruyi has been arrested for human trafficking after police intercepted her and found nine asylum seekers in her custody near the U.S.-Canada border on Friday.

The 43-year-old was arrested while driving a vehicle that contained the nine people from West Africa, CBC reported.

She has been charged with one count of human smuggling under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and one count of conspiracy to commit human smuggling after a four-month RCMP investigation into asylum seekers crossing into Saskatchewan. She will make her first appearance at Estevan Provincial Court next month. The police have also arrested the woman’s husband, 40-year-old Nigerian, Victor Omoruyi.

All nine asylum seekers found with Omoruyi have since been released after applying for refugee status in Canada.

Omoruyi’s arrest was part of a four-month investigation into human smuggling in the Saskatchewan. Several asylum seekers have crossed the U.S. border into Canada amid President Trump’s crackdown on immigration.
