A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced 41-year-old Canadian, Adrienne Munju, to 11 years in prison for importing 35.20 kilograms of cannabis known as “Canadian Loud” into Nigeria.

Munju was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on October 3, 2024.

Munju admitted to smuggling the drugs into Nigeria after being offered 10,000 Canadian dollars by an online recruiter. She claimed she needed the money to pay for her ongoing master’s degree in Canada.

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu convicted her on two counts. Munju received six years for the first count and five years for the second. The court also gave her an option to pay a ₦100 million fine.

During the court session, Prosecutor Abu Ibrahim presented evidence, including Munju’s Canadian passport, her confessional statement, and drug samples.

Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), NDLEA’s chairman, praised the officers involved and the court for the quick conviction, stating, “This stiff penalty will send a strong warning to foreigners and others who may be contemplating bringing illicit drugs into Nigeria.”
