Newcastle United captain, Bruno Guimarães, has been crowned the club’s official Player of the Year for the 2025/26 campaign, marking the first time he has received the honour.

The Brazilian midfielder is on course to end the season as Newcastle’s leading Premier League scorer with nine goals, despite spending two months sidelined through injury. He has also contributed eight assists across all competitions this season.

Guimaraes recently reached the milestone of 150 Premier League appearances for Newcastle and is edging closer to 200 appearances in all competitions since completing his £40 million move from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022.

Alongside Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn, who joined during the same transfer window, Guimaraes has cemented his place among Newcastle supporters by helping the club qualify twice for the Champions League and lifting the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

While Newcastle endured a difficult and inconsistent 2025/26 season, Guimaraes remained one of the team’s standout performers. The midfielder missed 15 matches through injury, the longest absence of his senior career, but still delivered impressive individual displays throughout the campaign.

The 27-year-old is now expected to play a key role for Brazil national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America later this summer.

A club statement released by Newcastle United F.C. read: “Everyone at Newcastle United congratulates Bruno on a fine season and deserved award!”

Guimaraes succeeds Dan Burn, who claimed last season’s accolade after scoring in the Carabao Cup final and earning his first call-up to the England squad. Previous winners include Anthony Gordon in 2023/24, Kieran Trippier in 2022/23 and Joelinton in 2021/22.

Only a select group of Newcastle legends have won the award on multiple occasions. Club record goalscorer Alan Shearer claimed the honour three times, matching former goalkeeper Shay Given for the most awards in the club’s history.

Former Newcastle manager and player Kevin Keegan won the award in consecutive years in 1983 and 1984, while Peter Beardsley repeated the feat in 1985 and 1986.
