Bollywood music legend Asha Bhosle dies after illustrious career spanning decades

Indian music icon Asha Bhosle, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated and versatile vocalists, has passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai.

Her death has triggered widespread mourning across India and the global entertainment community, with tributes highlighting her extraordinary influence on film music.

Widely regarded as a cultural legend whose career spanned decades, Bhosle was known for her remarkable range and energetic performances in numerous Bollywood productions. She also achieved international recognition, including collaborations with British pop star Boy George, which expanded her reach beyond Indian cinema.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to her legacy, stating: “Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world,” adding in another message on X that “Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Bhosle earned two Grammy nominations and received some of India’s highest civilian honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, reflecting her enduring contribution to Indian arts and cinema.

Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, confirmed that the singer had recently been admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening after suffering from a chest infection and fatigue prior to her death.

Condolences have continued to pour in from across the film industry, with many describing her as a towering presence in Indian music. Actor Shah Rukh Khan wrote on X: “Her voice has been one of the pillars of Indian cinema and will continue to resonate world over for centuries to come,” adding that her talent would outlive generations.

Actress Hema Malini also paid tribute, saying: “She who lent so much vivacity and character to her songs has left us grieving.”

Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed her passing to ANI news agency and stated that funeral arrangements will take place in Mumbai on Monday, as fans and colleagues continue to honor her remarkable legacy.
