A former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has defended the recent airstrike on Jilli Market, describing it as a justified military operation targeting a known terrorist stronghold.
In a statement issued on Sunday, he explained that the action followed reliable intelligence reports showing that Boko Haram and ISWAP members were using the location for logistical support and operational activities.
While addressing the aftermath of the strike, Buratai acknowledged reports indicating that civilians were among the casualties. He expressed deep regret over the loss of innocent lives, describing the incident as painful. Despite this, he praised the Nigerian Air Force alongside intelligence agencies, highlighting their bravery and professionalism in carrying out the mission.
He further noted that Jilli Market has historically functioned as a hub for terrorist logistics, even after repeated military interventions and shutdowns over the years. Recalling past operations, Buratai mentioned that troops were stationed in the area during Operation LAST HOLD in 2018, during which several confrontations with insurgents took place.
According to him, insurgent groups have continued to take advantage of the market, often with the support of certain individuals who trade with and supply them. He emphasized that such cooperation has enabled terrorists to sustain their activities within civilian environments.
Buratai also pointed out that insurgents frequently operate within civilian populations, using them as protective cover, which complicates military operations. “No military wishes to harm civilians, but when such locations are persistently used by terrorists, action becomes necessary,” he said.
He advised residents of Geidam, Gubio, Damasak, and Ngamdu to avoid engaging in commercial activities in markets associated with insurgent groups. He warned that communities maintaining such links could become vulnerable to military strikes aimed at eliminating terrorist threats.
The former army chief called for continued public backing for the armed forces, stressing that firm and decisive measures are essential to ending insurgency. He added that even as the country grieves for the victims, there must be unwavering determination to confront terrorism. Buratai also offered prayers for those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
