Blackout hits Abuja, Kogi as power station collapses

Published

Residents in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and some areas in Kogi State find themselves in darkness as power outages hit their homes. This blackout is a result of technical issues stemming from a power transmission substation.

The affected areas fall under the jurisdiction of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company. The AEDC has notified its customers in places like Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, and other parts of Abuja about the problem. They explained that a technical fault on the 33kv feeder k6 from the AT9 Karu Transmission Station caused the outage.

In a statement, the AEDC expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured residents that the Transmission Company of Nigeria maintenance crew is working to restore electricity supply to the affected areas.

“The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc wishes to notify its esteemed customers that there is currently a technical fault on 33kv feeder k6 from AT9 Karu Transmission Station, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

“The areas affected in Abuja are: Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, Old Karu Road, Glory Estate and environs,” the Disco said in a statement.

The TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, explained that power supply would be restored to Abuja DisCo after the maintenance is completed.

Meanwhile, the TCN has recently commissioned a 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer at its Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation. This initiative, done in collaboration with the World Bank, aims to increase the substation’s capacity and improve power supply to industries and communities in the region.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has taken notice of the worsening power situation and has summoned the management of AEDC and TCN to address the issue.

Despite explanations from both parties citing factors such as gas shortage, vandalism, and energy theft, residents continue to suffer from inconsistent power supply.
