ASUU set to evaluate mobilization across zones over planned strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities is set to evaluate its mobilization efforts across various zones in preparation for a planned nationwide strike.

The union had issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to address several outstanding demands.

Among the core issues are those related to conditions of service, including matters outlined in the FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) from 2012/2013 and the Memorandum of Action (MoA) from 2017. ASUU is also protesting the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils in federal and state universities and is calling for the release of three and a half months’ worth of withheld salaries for work already completed.

“Other demands include the release of unpaid salaries for members on sabbatical and adjunct positions due to the inadequacies of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), the release of third-party deductions by IPPIS, payment of Earned Academic Allowance, implementation of the visitation panel reports, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution instead of IPPIS.”

The Federal Government had earlier initiated plans to pay lecturers in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education through the Government Integrated Financial Management System.

According to the PUNCH, a member of ASUU’s National Executive Council, speaking anonymously expressed disappointment over the government’s handling of the situation.

He stated, “We have observed for too long and are shocked that the government has chosen to ignore us. After the mobilization, the NEC will meet to appraise the actions and formally decide on the next line of action.”
