Arsenal disclose £52.1m loss in 2022-23 accounts

Published

English football club, Arsenal has disclosed a loss of £52.1 million in their financial accounts for the 2022-23 period.

This figure marks an increase from the £45.5 million loss reported in the previous year. The club attributed this loss partly to “impairment write-downs on certain player registrations amounting to £18.1 million.”

However, the loss before tax, excluding exceptional items, decreased to £34 million, compared to £45.5 million in the 2022 financial results, as stated in the accounts filed with Companies House.

According to The Athletic, the return of the men’s team to UEFA competition, reaching the Europa League round of 16, and securing a second-place finish in the Premier League contributed significantly to improved underlying figures. Increased matchday revenue, owing to more matches played, also played a role.

Broadcast revenue surged from £146 million to £191.2 million, while commercial revenues also saw improvement, rising to £169.3 million from £141.7 million.

Arsenal emphasized the importance of European football in rebuilding a financially self-sustaining foundation for the club.

The club stated, “During 2022/23 and subsequently during the summer 2023 transfer window, the club has again invested strongly in the development of its men’s first-team playing resources.”

They underscored the significance of UEFA competition qualification in establishing a self-sufficient financial base.

Regarding the women’s team, they finished third in the 2022-23 Women’s Super League and secured the Conti Cup title. Notably, eight games were hosted at the Emirates Stadium, including the first-ever sell-out for the semi-final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Arsenal highlighted their continued investment in Arsenal Women, acknowledging the significant growth in interest and support for the women’s game.
