Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre following her arraignment over alleged cybercrime-related offences.
Okorie was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday by operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department before being transferred to Abuja.
Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the actress was taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja.
“She was arrested by operatives of the National Cybercrime Centre,” Adebisi told TheCable Lifestyle.
Filmmaker Ajemba Stanley also confirmed that the actress was charged to court on Wednesday and subsequently remanded at the Suleja prison.
In a series of posts on social media, Stanley criticised the manner of her arrest and arraignment, describing it as an abuse of power.
“You arrested Angela Okorie at midnight yesterday, flew her to Abuja as early as 6am, and this morning took her to court, where she was remanded in Suleja prison,” he wrote.
He questioned the speed of the judicial process in the case, adding, “So the judiciary can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep tonight knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison.”
Stanley vowed to travel to Abuja to follow up on the case and secure Okorie’s release, urging authorities to respect due legal process.
“Whoever is in charge of Angela Okorie’s arrest should let her go and approach a competent court. If you feel Angela has defamed you, the right thing is to sue her, not use the police to oppress Nigerians,” he said.
He also warned that human rights groups were monitoring the situation closely.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not officially disclosed the specific charges brought against the actress.
However, industry sources suggested that the case may be connected to Okorie’s long-running and public feud with fellow Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson.
The dispute intensified last year after Okorie made controversial claims about Johnson’s health and accused her of hypocrisy, remarks that triggered widespread backlash on social media.
Police authorities said further details on the allegations would be made public at a later time.
