Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their second-round qualifying fixture for the 2028 Olympic Games on Friday.

According to The PUNCH, second-half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu handed Nigeria a two-goal advantage at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.

The encounter was officially Comoros’ home fixture, although both legs will take place in Nigeria because the island nation lacks a CAF-approved stadium.

The Super Falcons dominated the opening half, creating several scoring opportunities but struggling to break down Comoros’ defence.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade came closest to opening the scoring when her effort struck the woodwork.

However, Comoros held firm to keep the encounter goalless at halftime.

Alozie, Kanu seal Super Falcons victory

Nigeria finally broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Alozie converted from close range after Gift Monday headed the ball into her path.

The defender nearly doubled her tally shortly afterwards, but the Comoros goalkeeper denied her effort.

Kanu extended Nigeria’s lead in the 59th minute, heading home Jennifer Echegini’s corner to put the Super Falcons firmly in control.

Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen subsequently introduced 19-year-old Semeihya Janet in place of Toni Payne as Nigeria searched for another goal.

Kanu had another opportunity in the 71st minute, but her effort from outside the penalty area was comfortably saved.

Despite continued pressure, Nigeria could not extend their advantage before the final whistle.

Eguavoen targets Olympic qualification

Speaking before the encounter, Eguavoen expressed confidence in his squad’s preparation for the two-legged fixture.

“Everyone has settled in well in camp as we have a full house now, and our focus is to present a strong and competitive squad for the two matches,” he said.

Comoros entered the tie after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate in the previous round, recording 17-0 and 13-0 victories.

Nigeria, meanwhile, received a bye into the second round.

The Super Falcons will face Comoros again on Tuesday, October 13, at Remo Stars Stadium, hoping to protect their advantage and advance to the next qualifying round.

Victory on aggregate would move Nigeria closer to securing a place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
