Renowned Nigerian lawyer, scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, has died at the age of 92.
According to The Punch, Kasunmu died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026. The Baptist Academy Old Students Association confirmed his death in a statement issued by its Global President, Olumide Ajomale.
Ajomale announced the death on behalf of the association’s National Executive Council. He described Kasunmu as a respected figure whose influence stretched across law, education and national development.
“With gratitude to God for a life well spent in service to God and humanity, we announce the passing of our distinguished alumnus, Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, who departed peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, 9th August 2026 at the age of 92,” the statement read.
BAOSA mourns ‘towering figure’
The association described the late Senior Advocate as “a towering figure in law, scholarship, and national development.” It highlighted his contributions as a lawyer, teacher, mentor and advocate.
Kasunmu belonged to the Baptist Academy Class of 1953. He later served as a trustee of the Baptist Academy Old Students Association.
BAOSA said he represented values the institution had long sought to promote, particularly “Integrity, Discipline, and Service.”
The association added that beyond his professional achievements, Kasunmu was a respected patriarch. His guidance and mentorship influenced generations of lawyers, students and members of the Baptist Academy community.
Honoured for lifetime of service
Kasunmu was among distinguished alumni recognised during Baptist Academy’s 170th Founders Day celebration last year.
He received the BAOSA Order of Excellence Award alongside other notable former students. This was in recognition of his contributions to society and the institution.
Reflecting on his impact, the association said his “legacy of wisdom, mentorship, and commitment to excellence will continue to inspire generations of Baptacads and Nigerians at large.”
BAOSA added that it found comfort in the impact Kasunmu made throughout his life. This was particularly through his dedication to law, education and service to humanity.
The association urged Baptist Academy alumni around the world to remember his family in their prayers. This is as they mourn his passing.
“Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” the statement added.
