Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the appointment of Professor Tomola Obamuyi as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

According to The Punch, the appointment followed the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council after Obamuyi emerged the highest-ranked candidate among 15 applicants interviewed by the institution’s Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, announced the appointment in a statement issued on Friday.

Obamuyi, a professor of Banking and Finance, will take over from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige.

The statement said the appointment was made “following the due recommendation of the Governing Council of the institution, chaired by Dr Tunji Abayomi, in line with the University’s Act and extant regulations.”

Before his appointment, Obamuyi served as Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at AAUA and was the pioneer substantive Dean of the School of Management Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

He was recognised as the Best Professor of Banking and Finance in Africa in 2015 by the Africa Education Leadership Awards in Mauritius and has participated in programme accreditation exercises for the National Universities Commission.

The new vice-chancellor has also served as Chairperson and Subject Expert of the Review Panel for Namibia’s National Council for Higher Education and presented academic papers at conferences across Europe, North America, Africa and Asia.

“Obamuyi will bring to the office decades of academic excellence, administrative experience, and a strong record of research and institutional development,” the statement said.

Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence that the new vice-chancellor would build on the achievements of the institution and further strengthen its reputation in teaching, research and community service.

The governor also urged Obamuyi to uphold the university’s core values while promoting innovation, collaboration and peaceful coexistence among staff, students and other stakeholders.

He reaffirmed the Ondo State Government’s commitment to supporting AAUA in sustaining its position as one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned universities.
