AFCON: Super Eagles becomes top ranking team left after Morocco, Senegal exit

Published

Nigeria’s Super Eagles emerge as the highest-ranked team remaining in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, following South Africa’s surprising 2-0 victory over Morocco on Tuesday night.

Senegal, previously the top-ranked team on the continent and reigning champion, was eliminated before the game, adding to the tournament’s unpredictability.

Morocco, the first African country to reach the World Cup semi-finals, entered the match as heavy favorites against South Africa, who faced challenges advancing beyond the group stage.

However, second-half goals from Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena propelled the Bafana Bafana to a remarkable triumph over the Atlas Lions.

Below is the list according to CAF and FIFA rankings:

  1. Morocco (CAF rank: 1, FIFA rank: 12)
  2. Senegal (CAF rank: 2, FIFA rank: 17)
  3. Nigeria (CAF rank: 3, FIFA rank: 34)
  4. Egypt (CAF rank: 4, FIFA rank: 36)
  5. Tunisia (CAF rank: 5, FIFA rank: 39)
  6. Algeria (CAF rank: 6, FIFA rank: 41)
