AFCON 2023: Morocco battles Congo, South Africa plays Mali today
Over the past week, African football has witnessed the rise of unexpected contenders as nations like Equatorial Guinea and Cape Verde have competed with and baffled some of the continent’s football powerhouses.
Cape Verde has already secured a spot in the tournament’s knockout stage, while Equatorial Guinea seems poised to follow suit, placing traditional giants Ghana and Cameroon at risk of an early exit.
In today’s crucial match, Morocco, Africa’s historically strong performer in the FIFA World Cup, will vie for advancement against the unpredictable Leopards of DR Congo.
Both teams are eager to progress to the knockout stages, setting the stage for a fierce battle for possession and dominance.
Morocco enters the game after a convincing 3-0 victory over Tanzania, while DR Congo drew 1-1 with Zambia in their opening match.
Simultaneously, Zambia, determined to restore pride, will face Tanzania in a match promising attacking flair and an opportunity for both teams to showcase their skills on the continental stage.
The weekend’s final game features South Africa’s Bafana Bafana against their spirited neighbors, Namibia’s Brave Warriors.
South Africa, having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mali in their initial match, needs a win or draw to stay in contention for the second round.
Meanwhile, Namibia, coming off a surprising victory against former champions Tunisia, only requires a win or draw to secure a second-round berth.
