AFCON 2023: I’m not under pressure to deliver for Super Eagles – Osimhen
Prolific Nigerian and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, is resolute in his stance that he faces no undue pressure to make a significant impact at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, despite being Africa’s reigning best player.
Despite scoring one goal in two appearances for Nigeria in the tournament, the 25-year-old has faced criticism for missing several clear-cut chances.
Contrary to the speculation linking his performance to the burden of his accolades, Osimhen dispelled the notion.
In a statement to reporters in Abidjan, he asserted, “I am not under pressure. I have won the title (African Player of the Year), but it’s now in the past. What is most important for me now is to do well with the team, make sure the team do well and win the AFCON.”
Emphasizing his team-oriented approach, Osimhen stated, “I don’t care about my individual performance. I could be on the bench and the other players get the job done.”
Looking ahead to the Super Eagles’ last group game against Guinea-Bissau at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Monday, with a kickoff at 7 pm Nigerian time,
