AFCON 2021: Cameroon beat Burkina Faso 5-3 on penalties to clinch third place

Cameroon defeated Burkina Faso 5-3 on penalties to claim third place at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament on Saturday night.

The Indomitable Lions came down from three goals down to force the game into penalties.

Burkina Faso took a 3-0 lead after 49 minutes but it appeared they just flattered to deceive, as Vincent Aboubakar championed the Lions’ comeback after their semifinal disappointment against Egypt.

Steeve Yago opened the scoring for Burkina Faso in the 24′ before André Onana own goal gave them a two goal lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Djibril Ouattara headed in the third four minutes into the second half.

But the hosts refused to give up as they started the second half with the introduction of the tournament’s top scorer, Vincent Aboubakar, who was benched in the first half.

The change paid off towards the end of the game as Stéphane Bahoken began the comeback with a 71st-minute lifeline to make it 3-1.

Aboubakar showed why he is unrivalled for the Golden Boot when he scored a brace in the space of two minutes (85′, 87′) to send the game into penalties.

The Cameroonian skipper’s eighth goal came as a gift after a collision between Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper and a defender allowed him to slot in a late equaliser.

The goal is the Cameroonian skipper’s eighth of the tournament and 23rd of for the indomitable Lions

Cameroon finished third after victories on penalties, compensation for their shootout loss against Mohammed Salah’s Egypt who face Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Sunday.
