The Imole Campaign Council has petitioned Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu over comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi. This came ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
According to Vanguard, the campaign council said in an August 12 petition that it was concerned about an “extremely disturbing video recording”. The video allegedly shows the Osun East senator making remarks capable of encouraging violence against Accord Party members and supporters.
The council quoted Fadahunsi as allegedly saying, “From now on, whenever you see Accord members, kill them. I authorise you to kill them.”
It also alleged that the senator suggested some voters would not be allowed to cast their ballots. This would happen even if they presented valid voter cards.
Adeleke camp seeks investigation
The campaign council described the alleged remarks as “extremely grave.” Moreover, it warned that they could threaten lives, public peace and the security of the state as the election approaches.
It asked the police to authenticate the video, investigate the circumstances surrounding the comments and invite Fadahunsi for questioning.
The council also wants investigators to determine whether any individuals or groups had already acted on the alleged remarks.
“Political office must never become immunity from investigation,” the petition stated.
The council, however, said its petition was not intended to prejudge the senator. Instead, it was to ensure that the allegations were properly examined by the authorities.
Council demands protection for voters
Beyond investigating Fadahunsi, the campaign council called for stronger security around polling units and collation centres during the governorship election.
“No Nigerian should have to fear being attacked or killed because of the political party they support,” the council said.
It urged the police to take preventive measures before any alleged threat could materialise. Furthermore, it demanded that supporters of all political parties are protected.
The petition also called on security agencies to create an environment where voters can participate without intimidation, harassment or violence.
With only days remaining before the election, the council said immediate action was necessary. This would safeguard public peace and confidence in the electoral process.
