A 42-year-old mechanic, Uche Orji , was on Wednesday arraigned in a Kubwa Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly cheating a businessman of N450,000.

The police charged the defendant of Apo Mechanic village, Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecution counsel, John Okpa, told the court that the complainant, Mike Unuakhe of ASCON camp, lower Usman Dam, entrusted his Mercedes Benz ‘R’ class to the defendant to repair sometime in May.

Okpa alleged that the defendant deceived the complainant into parting with N450, 000 to him for the repairs.

He said that the mechanic converted the money to his personal use.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 321 of the Penal Code.

The defendant however, pleaded not guilty.

The Defence Counsel, Ebie Osaze, prayed the court to admit his client to bail pursuant to section 168 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and 36 (5) of the 1999 constitution.

The prosecution counsel however objected to the bail application drawing the attention of the court to the gravity of the alleged offence.

The judge, Muhammad Adamu, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with one surety whom must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He ordered that the address of the surety must be verified by the prosecution counsel and adjourned the case until May 4 for hearing.
