“I was inside the church when it happened. I was at the back and my son was playing the guitar when it happened. It happened about 7a.m.”

Jackson Enukanerhire is a former Minority Leader of Okpe Local Government Council.

The boy has since been buried in the church premises.

Daniel Egiwie, Vice Chairman of the community, who survived the incident lamented that he did not know that the deceased was still trapped under the rubbles while they were busy rescuing others.

Another survivor of the ugly incident, Daniel Oghenekevwe Charles, said:

“We went to the house of God. We cannot question God. I thank God I survived it.”

It was learnt that the church, which was preparing for its centenary celebration, was erecting a new building beside the old building which collapsed during the morning Mass.

It was gathered that the incident happened when some parishioners rested on the wall of the uncompleted building which gave way owing to the pressure.

Meanwhile, Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State governor, has condoled with the family of the deceased with a promise to offset the medical bills of the injured victims.
