A man has reportedly paid $10,500 alimony to his ex-wife with 14 big sacks of coins weighing 890kg.

Mr Dwi Susilarto, a government employee, delivered 155 million rupiahs ($10,500), packed in 14 sacks, to the Karanganyar Religious Court in Central Java, Indonesia on Thursday using a wheelbarrow.

According to Jarkata Post, the court had ordered Mr Dwi to pay 178 million rupiah in back-dated alimony to his ex-wife Hermi Setyowati, who had sued him for “financially neglecting” her for nine years.

When Dwi delivered the bags, a fight nearly broke out between him and his ex-wife’s lawyer who claimed it was a subtle way of insulting his client.

Dwi, however, rejected the claim, saying it was donations from friends who decided to help him out.

He said,

“I’m only a low-ranking employee, how could I get Rp 178 million? My friends decided to help me by donating the money, but most of it is in coins.

“They helped me collect the money, some even brought buckets and sacks of coins.”

Setyowati, who eventually accepted the funds, wasn’t buying her former husband’s excuse.

“This is insulting – it’s like calling me poor,” she was quoted by local media as saying. The court ordered its staff to count the money.

In the three months since May, when he was ordered to pay up, Mr Dwi managed to collect 155 million rupiah in coins and the remaining 23 million rupiah in banknotes of 2,000 to 100,000 rupiah denominations.

He carried the money to the courtroom with the help of two friends and a wheelbarrow.

Ms Hermi, understandably, was not amused. An argument ensued between the camps supporting the former husband and wife in the courtroom, reported the Jakarta Post. Neither side wanted to count the coins, it said.

The court ordered its staff to count the money.

Ms Hermi said she felt insulted. “This is such an embarrassment because he considers me to be a beggar,” she was quoted as saying after eventually accepting the payment.
