Rapper Nicki Minaj has sparked speculation about becoming the next White House press secretary after a video of her praising President Donald Trump aboard Air Force One was shared by a top White House official.
The chatter began on Sunday when White House Communications Director Steven Cheung posted a two-minute clip of his conversation with Minaj on the presidential plane, captioning it: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”
The White House’s official X account responded with an “eyeballs” emoji, while Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz reposted the video, asking Minaj’s fanbase, the Barbz: “Hey Barbz, what do we think about this idea??” .
Minaj replied to Cheung’s post with an American flag and a grinning face with sweat emoji, appearing to laugh off the suggestion .
The role has been vacant since Katie Zacharia was forced out after just five days as press secretary earlier this month, following a rocky debut briefing and scrutiny over her credentials .
In the video, Minaj praised Trump’s business background and economic policies.
“Well, it’s exploding because we have a president that understands economics, first of all,” she said. “I’ve said before the President is naturally a businessman. He’s worked his way out of, you know, not having a dollar left in the bank. So if he can do that with himself and his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country” .
She also praised his foreign policy approach, saying: “He’s tough internationally. He tells them what we need, not what they need” .
Cheung asked whether anyone works harder than Trump on the campaign trail. “Absolutely not!” Minaj replied. “The man won three elections! He wakes up at four o’clock in the morning. He outworks people who are half his age” .
Later on Sunday, Minaj joined Trump at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, urging the crowd to support Republican candidates including Senate nominee Mike Rogers .
Trump drew attention to Minaj during his speech, telling the crowd: “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful a** before: Nicki Minaj. That’s hard to miss. Stand up!” .
Minaj then took the stage in a gold Gucci suit, leading the crowd in chants of “We love Trump” and praising the president for having “changed the energy of the country” .
“President Trump, it is an honor to stand with you every single time, and I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I will support you again,” she said .
She also weighed in on social issues, telling the crowd: “We don’t want our children to be bombarded with sex changes, right? We want people to leave the children alone” .
There has been no official indication from the White House that Minaj is being seriously considered for the press secretary position .
