Billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has spent more than $442 million backing Republican candidates and political organisations ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, placing him at the centre of a major fundraising effort to help the party maintain its influence in Congress.
New campaign finance disclosures show that Musk, who leads Tesla and SpaceX, recently channelled an additional $76.8 million into his America PAC, bringing his total financial commitment to the upcoming elections beyond $442 million, according to The Hill.
The latest contributions were received over roughly one week in October. America PAC, established by Musk during the 2024 election cycle, has become a major vehicle for his political spending. The latest injection of funds adds to the approximately $366 million he had previously committed to Republican candidates and allied political groups.
The Washington Post reported that much of Musk’s political expenditure is intended to support Republican efforts to retain control of Congress.
Texas Senate Race Attracts Major Contributions
A substantial share of Musk’s recent donations has gone towards the closely contested Texas Senate race, where Republican candidate and state Attorney General Ken Paxton is challenging Democratic contender James Talarico.
Campaign finance records cited by CBS News show that Musk contributed a combined $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a leading super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates, through two donations made in September.
The contributions included $75 million on September 9, followed by another $83 million approximately two weeks later. According to CBS News, the donations represented more than half of the organisation’s total receipts during the third quarter.
The Senate Leadership Fund subsequently transferred corresponding sums to a Texas-based political action committee supporting Paxton, according to the report.
Musk also provided $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, a political group supporting Paxton, through his trust.
Beyond the Texas contest, the billionaire contributed $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports Republican candidates seeking election to the House of Representatives. He also donated $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
His America PAC has additionally directed resources towards Republican candidates competing in closely fought congressional districts.
Musk Renews Large-Scale Political Spending
The latest disclosures highlight Musk’s renewed commitment to financing Republican political campaigns after he spent more than $250 million supporting US President Donald Trump and other Republican candidates during the 2024 election cycle.
His latest round of donations comes after concerns within Republican circles that he could scale back his political involvement following a public dispute with Trump last year.
However, the fresh contributions indicate that Musk remains financially involved in efforts to support Republican candidates and political organisations as the midterm elections approach.
Midterm Elections Carry Major Political Stakes
The November 3 elections are expected to play a significant role in determining which party controls both chambers of the US Congress.
The results will influence the extent to which the Trump administration can advance its legislative priorities, while also shaping the broader distribution of political power in Washington.
The elections are approaching against a backdrop of economic concerns and questions surrounding public support for the administration.
A September report by The Wall Street Journal found that Trump’s approval rating had dropped to 37 per cent in the publication’s polling. The newspaper described the figure as a low for a president approaching midterm elections in its polling records, which date back to 1990.
With substantial financial resources flowing into competitive races, Musk’s contributions have emerged as a prominent feature of the Republican fundraising effort ahead of the November vote.
