The Lagos State Government has blamed alleged construction violations for the collapse of a three-storey building in Fadeyi, which killed one person and injured three others.

According to The PUNCH, the building under construction collapsed on Akinola Street, off Ikorodu Road, on Thursday.

The Director of Operations of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olatunde Akinsanya, disclosed that the developer had received several warnings before the incident.

The emergency response involved LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Building Control Agency and police personnel.

Four people were recovered from the collapsed structure, with three sustaining injuries and one confirmed dead.

Akinsanya maintained that the tragedy could have been prevented if the developer had complied with instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

“It is an attempt to cut corners that caused all of this,” he said.

The official disclosed that the building had previously received notices warning against continued construction.

A red stop-work marking was reportedly visible on part of the damaged structure.

Akinsanya explained that the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory would collect samples from the rubble to investigate the structural failure.

Neighbouring buildings showing visible cracks would also undergo integrity assessments to determine their safety.

An eyewitness identified as Joseph said he narrowly escaped the incident after entering his residence moments before the collapse.

Residents gathered around the scene while emergency personnel continued operations.

The incident adds to recurring concerns over building safety and compliance with construction regulations in Lagos.

Authorities have continued urging property developers to obey structural safety requirements and respond promptly to official notices.
