The Peoples Redemption Party has raised concerns over an alleged plot by former members and serving officials to create divisions within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to The PUNCH, the party’s National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the allegation in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday.
Baba-Ahmed accused unnamed individuals of attempting to weaken the party’s grassroots support and undermine its participation in opposition coalition efforts.
He alleged that those behind the suspected scheme were planning to spend hundreds of millions of naira to influence party members and establish a rival faction.
However, the party did not identify those allegedly involved or provide evidence to substantiate the claims.
PRP warns members against alleged political interference
Baba-Ahmed urged party members to reject unauthorised efforts to recruit polling agents or influence political activities within the organisation.
“In particular, attempts to recruit polling agents for the party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted. Huge amounts of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed,” Baba-Ahmed said.
The chairman also cautioned individuals allegedly working with the governing party against interfering in PRP affairs.
“The persons in the governing party involved in this scheme have been advised to steer clear of the PRP and distance themselves from attempts to create a faction with their party’s funds and their names. Serving officers of the Party involved in this scheme will face disciplinary measures,” he added.
Baba-Ahmed maintained that the leadership remained committed to protecting the party’s independence and political structure.
He further assured members and supporters that the PRP would continue participating in efforts to build a credible opposition coalition ahead of the elections.
He insisted that the party would not abandon its commitment to challenging the continuation of the current administration beyond 2027.
The allegations come amid ongoing political realignments and consultations among opposition parties seeking stronger alliances before the next general election.
The PRP leadership urged members to remain vigilant and resist attempts to undermine the party’s unity.
