NSCDC arrests four suspects over cable theft, vandalism in Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, has arrested four suspects over alleged vandalism and theft of electrical and armoured cables in Abuja.

The FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, explaining that the suspects were apprehended in separate operations across Kubwa, Abaji and Kwali areas of the territory. According to him, NSCDC operatives made the arrests following credible intelligence provided by members of the public.

Odumosu said one of the suspects, a 44-year-old man, was arrested in Abaji for allegedly possessing high-tension aluminium conductor cables believed to belong to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

He explained that during interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed that two individuals, who are currently at large, had delivered the cables to him for safekeeping until prospective buyers could be found.

“Both suspects are currently at large but efforts are ongoing to apprehend them as well as identify other persons connected with the alleged criminal activity.

“He was subsequently granted administrative bail to enable him to produce a credible surety as investigation continues.

“Exhibits recovered were; bundles of high-tension aluminium conductor cables,” Odumosu said.

In a separate operation, the commandant disclosed that two 27-year-old men were arrested over the alleged vandalism and unlawful possession of electrical cables reportedly stolen from the vicinity of Government Secondary School, Kubwa, popularly known as “Black and White”.

He said the arrest of one of the suspects followed intelligence received from commercial motorcyclists and tricycle operators, who alerted security operatives to suspicious activities around the school premises.

Acting on the information, NSCDC personnel moved to the area and recovered approximately 38 rolls of electrical installation cables, alongside cut pieces of power cables allegedly concealed in a large sack, Odumosu added.
