Enugu Rangers strengthened their chances of reaching the CAF Champions League group stage after defeating Algerian side MC Alger 2-0 in the first leg of their second-round qualifying fixture.
According to The Guardian, the Nigerian club secured the victory on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Despite playing much of the encounter with 10 men, Rangers produced a determined performance to overcome their visitors.
Rangers strike twice in second half
The Flying Antelopes faced sustained pressure from MC Alger but remained organised defensively while searching for opportunities to score.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 81st minute when Super Eagles defender Kenneth Igboke converted a penalty.
The goal gave Rangers an important advantage after a difficult contest.
James Eno doubled the lead a few minutes later, completing a late scoring burst that put the Nigerian side in control of the tie.
Rangers will now travel to Algeria for the return leg with a two-goal advantage.
Nigerian clubs face contrasting fortunes
While Rangers secured victory, fellow Nigerian side El-Kanemi Warriors endured a difficult outing in the CAF Confederation Cup.
El-Kanemi played out a 2-2 draw against Moroccan club Raja Casablanca in Ikenne, Ogun State.
The result leaves the Nigerian club facing a challenging second leg in Morocco.
Rangers, meanwhile, will seek to protect their advantage when both teams meet again in Algeria.
The winner of the two-legged contest will advance to the CAF Champions League group stage.
The victory has strengthened Rangers’ hopes of representing Nigeria in the competition’s lucrative group phase.
